Caregiver Fatigue: How Do You Know if It’s Affecting You?

Caregiver fatigue. What do you really know about it? It’s defined as being a form of exhaustion that affects one’s emotional, mental, and physical state. It can present itself as anxiety, depression, fatigue, panic attacks, and sadness. It’s hard to power through it.

When you’re a family caregiver, it’s easy to burn out. That’s what happens with caregiver fatigue. You give so much that you simply hit that wall. You just have no energy left for others. It can take a toll on your health.

True Caregiver Fatigue Experiences

Jane’s mother has Alzheimer’s. She works part-time from home and balances that with her mother’s daily care needs. She struggles daily to get her mom to take a shower. Her mom insists on wearing the same clothing for weeks. She won’t take them off so that Jane can do the laundry. Her doctor told her she needs to reduce her stress as she’s been having panic attacks. She doesn’t know how to get the help she needs.

Jim’s wife has heart disease. His son insists that putting her in a nursing home is best for everyone. Jim loves his wife and doesn’t want to do that. He wants to care for her at home. He’s having a hard time sleeping lately and needs someone to support him in his effort to let his wife age at home.

Keith is struggling with his dilemma. His dad has high blood pressure and keeps forgetting to take medications. He’s loading his foods with salt. Keith works full-time and is an only child. He’s moved in with his dad and handles all the cooking, medication reminders, and cleaning. He has no time to spend with friends or a girlfriend. He’s pretty sure he’s becoming depressed.

Home Care Services Can Help

You might think you need to do it all, but you need to stop and consider the facts. If you do burn out, what happens then? Who will step in to care for your family member? To provide the best care possible, you need to think of yourself.

Home care services can help. Caregivers can cook meals for an elderly client while you work or run errands. They can change and wash sheets and towels, vacuum carpets, and dust furnishings. Caregivers can schedule appointments, drive clients to stores and medical offices, and offer medication reminders.

Talk to our home care agency about respite care. You’ll get to take breaks when needed, and your family member is safe while you’re away. Call our home care agency now to get started.
